The final film, while in development for nearly 20 years, was published and submitted to a number of film festivals, and the film was picked up for distribution by Dimension Films.[8] In April 1998, the company acquired the rights to the film.[9] After a screening of the final cut, Dimension founder Bob Weinstein purchased the film for US$3 million.[112] In total, the film's budget was $250,000, with the producers' own money.[8] Following its theatrical release, Dimension Films distributed the film to DVD, making it the first film distributed by the company.[8] The film received positive reviews and many accolades, being named the greatest horror film of all time by Entertainment Weekly.[1]

Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Studios obtained the rights to distribute The Blair Witch Project internationally in July 1999;[8][113] the company, which had spent $10 million to acquire the rights, was concerned that the film would be a flop because it did not have a distributor in the United States.[8] DreamWorks and Paramount co-financed the international market.

The film's production was notable for its low budget, and for how Fincher made all the decisions, rather than having it produced by an outside production company. Fincher has stated that he is a perfectionist, and that because of this he is not comfortable choosing from many possible options. The cast and crew shot the film in Toronto and Niagara Falls. The cast included Sally Hawkins (2017) and Michael Shannon (2016) as leads, Octavia Spencer (2016) and Doug Jones (2017) as supporting characters, and Michael Stuhlbarg (2014) and Richard Jenkins (2017) as supporting actors. They shot the film digitally using Alexa Mini and Red Epic cameras. The music in the movie was a mixture of classical and contemporary songs, including songs from the 1960s.[29]
