The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety uses restraint effectiveness ratings to estimate how effectively seat belts and other restraints reduce occupant injury in different types of crashes.
NHTSA's New Car Assessment Program (www.safercar.gov) is the result of the U.S. Congress' directive that NHTSA create a new vehicle safety rating system. NHTSA conducted over 50 consumer studies and thousands of crash tests to develop its New Car Assessment Program. The scoring system assigns a letter grade to vehicles based on their performance in the crashworthiness, rear crash prevention, and rollover resistance categories. The New Car Assessment Program also provides an estimate of a vehicle's insurance cost based on the assigned letter grade. In order to maintain the integrity of the program, NHTSA needs to be sure that the vehicles analyzed are representative of the entire U.S. market.
After this I rented Cronenberg's Dead Ringers, which also carries an NC-17 rating in some countries. It's a bit more of a plot-driven film, with a much less 'antique' feel to it. The story of two late-80s identical twins (Stephen Rea and Jeremy Irons) in an ENT competition, the films them growing together and playing along to their own lives and their own dreams of becoming a big star, but also battling each other at times through the competition and the choices they make for one another. The whole film is actually quite good, with the final battle between the two being especially good (Irons's character is much more dark and complicated than Rea's, while Irons's character is also becoming much more interesting as his character becomes more human). The highlights here include Irons's character, who is the more controlled but more complex of the twins, and the final confrontation between the two where the two become more and more aware of their own thoughts and feelings (both, which in some ways is perhaps even more intense than the bedroom scenes in Crash, where Ballard and his wife come closer through their car-crash fantasies). If you saw Crash you'll recognize many of the techniques that are used here, but it also has a much more developed storyline. And while there's some nudity and sex scenes here, they're much more tame than in Crash (and in the R-rated version even more so). 827ec27edc
