Did you know that the Windows 8.1 update will brick your device? It's true. You'll need to reinstall completely. Took my laptop from Windows 7 (pro) to 8.1 and my tablet from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. If you have an update already complete, you shouldn't have to reinstall if you just want to change stuff -- this will just brick your device. So first do an update with the computer you need to recover on, and that should take care of it. But if it's a clean build and you're ready to do a fresh install of Windows 10...then you need to put the installer on a USB drive. At least until Windows 10 is ready to unhook the PC from the internet when you're done. Also, all your apps will be gone because Windows 8.1 takes away the placements for apps, so there won't be an "Applications" section in the app bar. You're SOL.
