There's one scene in the movie that's so bad, so ridiculous, that it's funny. Jason manages to kill a guy and then has a little chat with him. He's basically trying to convince this guy to go see a movie. The guy has to see a movie, the guy has no food, the guy has no home, and the guy is not going to leave his wife. You get the idea. Jason is like a carnival barker.
Jason's terrifying monologue about which one of the survivors is going to get the hell out of town first, is laughable even to me. It's basically how to be an asshole in a movie about being an asshole. Jason makes a living out of being an asshole, and he's never so eloquent about it. He tries to convince both girls that they should leave, but only says that one doesn't have a home, the other doesn't have food, and then the two kill each other. He then tries to convince the remaining guy to leave, but he has no home, no food, and no money. But he does have a boat, so he sets off across the lake. He starts talking about how he's going to look for the boat, and we follow his progress, like the audience becomes a character, and we're having the experience of watching Jason's head. He floats across the water, and there's a scene where he's fishing, and the only people that are there are a bunch of teenage girls who want to find out what all the fuss is about. He's like a fish out of water, and they mock him for it. He storms off and walks out of his role. It's a complete betrayal of the idea of what a Friday the 13th film should be.
Unfortunately, the film is not as successful at playing with the idea of social self-awareness. This is most evident in Jason's interior monologue, which is essentially the only reason the film exists. It's not just a continuation of the spirit of the first film, but a complete abandonment of everything that made that film successful. Instead of a rambling, babbling, crazy Jason, we get an articulate, rational one. The first film was a movie about the madness of one's own mind. This one is about the madness of other people's minds.
I'd like to see this movie over again because I don't understand what the filmmakers were thinking. The worst thing that could happen when you kill Jason is that a new Jason will take his place. This time, the filmmakers have to make Jason invincible, not just killing him.
