Despite the fact that Landon was a male artist, his disapproval of the training of female artists was not unique. Indeed, Landon's views were part of a larger picture, a debate that had been going on for at least a century, and one that was particularly active in the art academies of France in the first half of the eighteenth century. Here, as Figures and Sculptures and other public pamphlets make clear, Landon was one of many artists who strongly opposed the introduction of women students at the Academies, and he published one of the many pamphlets that argued on the issue.62 The first sign of this movement was a publication, in 1746, by a former student of the Academies, Charles Le Brun, whose Essai sur l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts (Essay on the Fine Arts School) made a case for training more in the classical tradition (i.e., less in the study of the human body and more in the art of antiquity) and fewer in the study of nature. Le Brun's thesis was that the study of painting, sculpture, and architecture should be reduced and that the colleges should limit themselves to training students in the study of the human body.63 Le Brun's proposal, which went against the current and was intended to replace the existing educational system, was not well received.64 His views were not supported by the major proponents of the existing system, the Academies themselves.65 This was not the only publication that would debate the merits of classical versus naturalist training, however.66

The idea that the study of anatomy from the living man is harmful to women was very widespread during the centuries in which Eve, in the allegory of Saint Luke, was fated to be the prey of the serpent. The anatomical knowledge of women was considered to be a poison that would ruin them. It was then that it was forbidden to women to read the books of the ancients, except for those of Hippocrates, who said that it was necessary for the health of women to know the properties of the body.61-2 In fact, it was not until the end of the Middle Ages, at the time of the Renaissance, that the anatomist Vesalius tried to overcome this prejudice. Landon had a great influence in the work of this physician, the most complete in its kind. One can even say that it was he who prepared the way for the great revolution in the education of women. He allowed the existence of an institution that would serve as a model for the future. Landon also made an effort, in his journal of anatomy, to study the more delicate aspects of the diseases of women. He was the first to study the anatomy of the ovaries as well as the lymphatic system, which had not been studied previously. His work was even more fruitful if one considers that it was also a reflection on his own experience. He took care to avoid the extravagances to which surgeons had resorted in dissecting the bodies of women.62
