In this study, Johnson investigated the inclusion of genre specific music instruction in her middle school and high school piano classes. Johnson’s research method was qualitative, using interviews and semi-structured interviews with experienced teachers, student interviews, and observations of the class. Johnson found that music educators were able to include varied genres of music in their middle school and high school piano classes. Johnson showed that, by combining genre specific music instruction and classroom activities, each student could enjoy a broad range of music.
