The Snorra Edda, originally called the Edda, is a collection of magical charms and lore compiled in the twelfth century by the Icelandic bishop Snorri Sturluson. The purpose of the book was to record and preserve the mythology and lore of the North including the land and the gods. The Snorra Edda survives in three major versions. The first is the hand-written manuscript conserved in the Icelandic National Museum. The second, a copy of which resides in the Heiðarvík manuscript, was copied in Iceland in the thirteenth century by the scribe Guðmundur Helmari. Besides the Snorra Edda, the Eddic poem Baldrs Draumar, a manuscript in the Ritos Magical Collection, and the Háleygjatal, an epic poem written by Snorri Sturluson's grandson, were all preserved in Icelandic.
The Skaldskaparmál, or Lay of the Skalds, is a special section of the Skaldskaparmál. In the Skaldskaparmál, Gísli Þórðarson, a skald, recounts the genealogy of his family, paying particular attention to his grandfather, Þjóðólfr Þórðarson. In a section of the Lay of the Skalds called Pregnant Spells, the poem describes the use of magical herbs to enchant the womb of a pregnant woman. The section mentions the use of málfræði and a certain fagr in order to become pregnant. The skald also describes the use of sibblan and Hæðimanna in order to become pregnant.
The grimoire was compiled by four people, possibly starting in the late 16th century and going on until the mid-17th century.
